World Wind is a program that acts as a virtual globe, developed by NASA for use on personal computers with Microsoft Windows. Composed by images from NASA satellites and aerial photographs of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) on three-dimensional models of the Earth, and in newer versions, Mars and the Moon.
The user can interact with the selected planet by rotating and expanding areas. Also place names and borders can be displayed, among other data and images. The program also contains a module to display images from other Internet sources that use the protocol of the Open Geospatial Consortium Web Map Service. Additionally, there are several expansions for World Wind that increase their functionality, for example, to measure distances or to obtain data from a GPS position.
With the basic installation it can display data layers showing the flags of countries, names, lines of latitude and longitude, population density, waypoints and other data.
Also you can download additional layers such as applications. One of the available ones has an extension called Wikipedia that shows points of interest on earth with links to Wikipedia.
You can also download the program for other planets, which like the Earth, can be seen in photographs almost entirely, but with lower resolution. Among the stars that can be downloaded we can find the Moon, Mars, Venus, Jupiter and its four main satellites Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
